Sidetrips

In addition to the many trips I took to major cities, there were several smaller cities and towns that I laid waste to as well. Most of these extra places were within a few hours drive of Fukuoka, and none of these trips deserves too much mention. I've put the links to the pictures with short descriptions of the trip next to them below:

  • Yame City - I did two separate homestays in this small town an hour south of Fukuoka, so I have plenty of pictures of this place. There's nothing spectacular to see here, but the baby daughter of the homestay family I stayed with on my first visit was quite adorable. I'm sure you'll be able to tell which one she is in the pictures.
  • Shimonoseki - This is a historically important city just across the bridge connecting Kyushu and Honshu. I visited Shimonoseki on a day trip with two of my Japanese friends. We visited a variety of places, including a semi-famous shrine, a museum, a beautiful library, and a delicious little bakery.
  • Karatsu - This is a small city west of Fukuoka. I don't remember exactly how far away from Fukuoka it is, but I do know there is a subway line in Fukuoka that runs all the way out to Karatsu, so it couldn't possibly be that far away. I took pictures of the beautiful Karatsu Castle and a museum full of old floats for the annual Karatsu festival, as well as a few other random places and things.
